Description |
| Acquired by Hologic July 2006
R2 Technology, Inc. headquartered in California, designs and develops proprietary signal processing neural network technology called ImageChecker to assist radiologists by minimizing the possibility of false negative readings during the review of x-ray and other diagnostic imaging modalities. It represented the first commercial application of neural net technology to computer aided detection of radiological images. The ImageChecker was recognized as a new information age tool to extend the benefits of technology to society. |

| Products / Services |
R2's ImageChecker system has the potential to detect findings that might otherwise be overlooked during the review process, thus increasing cancer detection. In mammography, CAD technology also is extremely effective in identifying calculations and masses, many of which can be cancerous. For example, clinical trials have demonstrated that use of the ImageChecker system could result in earlier detection of up to 23.4% of the cancers currently detected with screening mammography in those women who had a prior screening mammogram nine to 24 months earlier. Early studies of the ImageChecker system from lung CT images are indicating significant improvements in detection rates.

| Technology / Differentiation |
| The ImageChecker System, the first FDA approved Computer Aided Detection (CAD) System for breast imaging, assists radiologists during their review of screening mammograms by identifying areas on the mammogram that contain features associated with cancer that may warrant a second review. CAD is now being used in increasing numbers of radiologists as "a second pair of eyes" when reading mammograms or CT lung images. |
 |
| Market / Customers |
Today, the ImageChecker has been adopted by renowned medical institutions around the world. R2 is recognized as a leader in the international market. Over 1,000 (includes film-based and CAD for digital mammography) ImageChecker systems have been shipped worldwide. Twelve peer-reviewed published papers have covered the ImageChecker. Over 7 million mammograms have been interpreted with ImageChecker assistance. To date, more than seven million women have had their mammograms interpreted with the aid of this leading CAD system. R2 has pioneered third party reimbursement, including coverage from Medicare and more than 450 private insurers. In addition, R2 recently installed the world's first commercial ImageChecker CT CAD system for detection of lung nodules in computed tomography ("CT") images in Athens, Greece.

| Status |
| R2 Technology, a leader in computer aided detection for the early detection ("CAD") of cancer, recently announced several key milestones including the installation of an ImageChecker breast CAD system with OmniCAD technology in Anchorage, Alaska, bringing R2's CAD technology to all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Canada. CAD has received broad support from radiologists, the American College of Radiology, American Cancer Society and patient advocacy groups. |
