Description
Aethlon Medical has developed a patented extracorporeal device, the Hemopurifier, to address the treatment of viral conditions that are either resistant (or capable of evolving resistance) to drug and vaccine therapies. The Hemopurifier's real-time filtration technology is designed to rapidly reduce the presence of infectious disease and/or toxins in the body.
Products / Services
The Hemopurifier is designed to rapidly separate and capture infectious viruses and toxins from the circulation in a manner similar to that of the natural immune response. Regulatory and commercialization initiatives in the United States are focused on bioterror threats, while international initiatives are directed towards naturally evolving pandemic threats and chronic infectious disease conditions, including Hepatitis-C (HCV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In vitro studies of the Hemopurifier have also documented its efficiency in capturing dengue hemorrhagic fever, Ebola, measles, mumps, influenza, and pox viruses (among others). The company is also transitioning its technology into cancer applications.
Technology / Differentiation
Aethlon's Hemopurifier uses a novel multi-patented platform technology designed for the single use removal of viral pathogens from blood. Its cartridge combines the principles of affinity chromatography and hemodialysis to boost the efforts of the natural immune response in fighting off cell and organ infection. The Hemopurifier captures viruses, such as HIV, via the invariant polysaccharide chains residing on their surface glycoproteins (which can otherwise bind to healthy host cells and enable viral infection). It has been designed for utilization in the global infrastructure of dialysis and continuous renal replacement machines already present in hospitals and clinics, and may be used in conjunction with other available therapies.
Market / Customers
The CDC estimates the annual cases of debilitating dengue fever at 50 to 100 million. The most severe form, dengue hemorrhagic fever, affects 500,000 individuals each year. There is currently no vaccine or cure for this condition, aside from killing the originating mosquito vector. The Hemopurifier can thus be applied to treating dengue fever and other conditions not addressed with vaccines and anti-viral medications.
Funding
As it generates no revenues, Aethlon funds its operations through the issuance of common stock and debt. It has an agreement in place with Fusion Capital, whereby Fusion committed to buying up to $6 million in Aethlon common stock over a 30-month period that began in December 2004. As of June 2006, Aethlon received $1.7 million of the $6 million.
Status
The FDA has classified the Hemopurifier as a Class III Medical Device in U.S. regulatory submissions. Aethlon is currently pursuing clinical programs targeting the market clearance of its technology as a countermeasure against bioterror threats in the United States, as well as initiatives to drive the early commercialization in India. The company has research partnerships with India's National Institute of Virology (a collaborating laboratory with the WHO), CDC and the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). In July 2008, Aethlon announced that it had opened its second HIV/AIDS clinical study center in Bihar, India.
