Apieron, a medical devices company, has developed a novel diagnostic breath test for Asthma that is simple and highly accurate. The company’s device measures a patient’s exhaled nitric oxide level, which gives a direct indication of the level of airway inflammation. Knowledge of an individual’s airway inflammation is critical for administration of medicine, and also for identifying compliance issues. Current lung function tests for asthma either do not directly measure the level of airway inflammation, or do so in an invasive manner. Asthma is an inflammatory disease that afflicts 18 million people in the US alone, yet there are no non-invasive diagnostic tests that give an indication of the extent of respiratory airway inflammation.
