Trinity Orthopedics is a medical device company that develops products for minimally invasive lumbar spinal fusion. Lumbar spinal fusion surgery is used to correct spinal problems such as degenerative disc disease. In the procedure, vertebrae in the lumbar region of the spine are combined to reduce back pain and prevent abnormal motion of the spine. Bone graft is introduced between the two vertebrae to cause them to grow together. Minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery uses smaller incisions than its traditional counterpart. The procedure is designed to reduce damage to surrounding tissues, leading to a shorter recovery time.
The San Diego-based company aims to reduce the incidence of complications resulting from lumbar spinal surgery, such as nerve damage or degeneration of adjacent discs. Trinity’s products are already used in a number of medical centers in the U.S. The company recently introduced its first product system to the U.S. market, and plans to submit a second product system to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in mid-2010.
