Synovis Buys Surgical Closure System

Synovis Life Technologies earlier this week completed an acquisition of the 4Closure Surgical Fascia Closure System, a device for closing punctures in chest- or abdonimal-wall tissue after surgery. The device was purchased from privately held Fascia Closure Systems, of Santa Ana, CA. The 4Closure system, which is authorized for sale in the U.S. and has a patent pending, facilitates repeatable and controlled closure so as to prevent hernia formation, and painful and cosmetically undesirable bunching of tissue, muscle and fascia at the closure site. Synovis will train its direct sales team on the product throughout April and will introduce it officially next week at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons meetings in Las Vegas. The potential U.S. market for closure of defects in the fascia caused by laparoscopic entry ports is large and growing. The company will initially focus its marketing efforts in the bariatric space, an opportunity approaching $15 million.
